  Apparentlytherewerethreemeninchargeoftheproceedings:theoneared-beardedmuzhikinaseaman’sblouse;thesecondatallmanwithhunchedshoulders,thinlegs,andlongarmswhokeptgraspingtheforemanbythecollar,shakinghim,andbawling,“Whereareyourlathes?Bringthemout!“whilenoticeablealsowasabroad-shoulderedyoungfellowinaraggedredshirtwhokeptthrustingpiecesofscantlingthroughthewindowsofthebarraque,andshouting,“Catchholdofthese!Laythemoutinarow!“;andthethirdtheex-soldierhimself。Thelast-named,ashejostledhiswayamongthecrowd,keptvociferating,viciously,virulently,andwithacurioussystemofdivisionofhissyllables:

  Throughthebluetobacco-smokehegazedintotheglowingembers;

  “AtleastIamsorryforsuchfellows,“Vasilicontinued。

  vessel,whilefromthered-beardedmuzhikcameathick,raucousshoutof:
