  Butitisnotall。Therecometohimcertainjunctures,crises,whenlife,likeahighwayman,springsuponhim,demandingthathestandanddeliverhisconvictionsinthenameofsomerighteouscause,biddinghimdoevilthatgoodmaycome。IcannotsaythatIbelieveindoingevilthatgoodmaycome。Idonot。Ithinkthatanymanwhohonestlyjustifiessuchcoursedeceiveshimself。

  thinkthattheyarenot。ForintheSouththeytakeanegrofromjailwherehewaswaitingtobedulyhung。TheSouthhasneverclaimedthatthelawwouldlethimgo。ButinWyomingthelawhasbeenlettingourcattle-thievesgofortwoyears。Weareinaverybadway,andwearetryingtomakethatwayalittlebetteruntilcivilizationcanreachus。Atpresentweliebeyonditspale。Thecourts,orratherthejuries,intowhosehandswehaveputthelaw,arenotdealingthelaw。Theyarewitheredhands,orrathertheyareimitationhandsmadeforshow,withnolifeinthem,nogrip。Theycannotholdacattle-thief。Andsowhenyourordinarycitizenseesthis,andseesthathehasplacedjusticeinadeadhand,hemusttakejusticebackintohisownhandswhereitwasonceatthebeginningofallthings。Callthisprimitive,ifyouwill。ButsofarfrombeingaDEFIANCEofthelaw,itisanASSERTIONofit——thefundamentalassertionofselfgoverningmen,uponwhomourwholesocialfabricisbased。
