  Theylefttheroom。Mr。Fentolinhimselfescortedtheinspectorintothelibraryandorderedwhiskyandcigars。

  Mr。Fentolinescortedtheinspectortohisdog-cart,shookhandswithhim,andwatchedhimdriveoff。OnlyMrs。SeymourFentolinremainedupontheterrace。Heglidedovertoherside。

  “Mydearflorence,“heasked,“wherearetheothers?“

  “Mr。HamelandEstherhavegoneforawalk,“sheanswered。“Geraldhasdisappearedsomewhere。Hasanything-iseverythingallright?“

  Mrs。Fentolinsighed。ShewaswatchingthefiguresofEstherandHamelfarawayinthedistance,pickingtheirwayacrossthelaststripofmarshlandwhichlaybetweenthemandthesea。
