  portionofseveralboardsholdingtogetherhadfallenacrosstherail,andoneendprotrudedoverboard,likeagangwayleadinguponnothing,likeagangwayleadingoverthedeepsea,leadingtodeath——asifinvitingustowalktheplankatonceandbedonewithourridiculoustroubles。Andstilltheair,thesky——aghost,somethinginvisiblewashailingtheship。
