  AssoonasIhadbrokenupthisunpromisingtete—a—teteandsettledReginaldwherehecouldwatchthecroquetplayerslosingtheirtempers,Iwanderedofftofindmyhostessandrenewthekittennegotiationsatthepointwheretheyhadbeeninterrupted。Ididnotsucceedinrunningherdownatonce,andeventuallyitwasMrs。McKillopwhosoughtmeout,andherconversationwasnotofkittens。

  Personally,Ican’tseewherethedifficultyinchoosingsuitablepresentslies。NoboywhohadbroughthimselfupproperlycouldfailtoappreciateoneofthosedecorativebottlesofliqueursthataresoreverentlystagedinMorel’swindow——anditwouldn’tintheleastmatterifonedidgetduplicates。AndtherewouldalwaysbethesuprememomentofdreadfuluncertaintywhetheritwascremedementheorChartreuse——liketheexpectantthrillonseeingyourpartner’shandturnedupatbridge。PeoplemaysaywhattheylikeaboutthedecayofChristianity;thereligioussystemthatproducedgreenChartreusecanneverreallydie。

  Andthen,ofcourse,thereareliqueurglasses,andcrystallisedfruits,andtapestrycurtains,andheapsofothernecessariesoflifethatmakereallysensiblepresents—
