  butonthisoccasionIfoundmyselfpersonagratainthehighestdegree。Therewasonlyonewordwhentheformalitiesweredisposedof;andthatwas\"WeareupagainstAugustusallday。\"

  Theshowing—upofAugustusscandalizedoneortwoinnocentandpatrioticcriticswhoregardedtheprowessoftheBritisharmyasinextricablyboundupwithHighcastleprestige。ButourGovernmentdepartmentsknewbetter:theirproblemwashowtowinthewarwithAugustusontheirbacks,well—meaning,brave,patriotic,butobstructivelyfussy,self—important,imbecile,anddisastrous。
