AfurtherexperimentmadebyMrArnoldDalywiththisplayisworthrecording。In1905MrDalyproducedMrsWarren’sProfessioninNewYork。ThepressofthatcityinstantlyraisedacrythatsuchpersonsasMrsWarrenare\"ordure,\"andshouldnotbementionedinthepresenceofdecentpeople。ThishideousrepudiationofhumanityandsocialconsciencesotookpossessionoftheNewYorkjournaliststhatthefewamongthemwhokepttheirfeetmorallyandintellectuallycoulddonothingtochecktheepidemicoffoullanguage,grosssuggestion,andravingobscenityofwordandthoughtthatbrokeout。Thewritersabandonedallself—restraintundertheimpressionthattheywereupholdingvirtueinsteadofoutragingit。Theyinfectedeachotherwiththeirhysteriauntiltheywereforallpracticalpurposesindecentlymad。TheyfinallyforcedthepolicetoarrestMrDalyandhiscompany,andledthemagistratetoexpresshisloathingofthedutythusforceduponhimofreadinganunmentionableandabominableplay。Ofcoursetheconvulsionsoonexhausteditself。Themagistrate,naturallysomewhatimpatientwhenhefoundthatwhathehadtoreadwasastrenuouslyethicalplayformingpartofabookwhichhadbeenincirculationunchallengedforeightyears,andhadbeenreceivedwithoutprotestbythewholeLondonandNewYorkpress,gavethejournalistsapieceofhismindastotheirmoraltasteinplays。
