  Hethentookhimapart,mademanyinquiriesconcerningColonelTalbot,andwhenhehadreceivedalltheinformationwhichEdwardwasabletogiveconcerninghimandhisconnexions,heproceeded,-Icannotbutthink,Mr。Waverley,thatsincethisgentlemanissoparticularlyconnectedwithourworthyandexcellentfriend,SirEverardWaverley,andsincehisladyisofthehouseofBlandeville,whosedevotiontothetrueandloyalprinciplesoftheChurchofEnglandissogenerallyknown,theColonel’sownprivatesentimentscannotbeunfavourabletous,whatevermaskhemayhaveassumedtoaccommodatehimselftothetimes。’’

  thoughtWaverleytohimself,whenhehadperusedthislongandgravedocument,howverytolerablewouldallthissound,andhowlittleshouldIhavethoughtofconnectingitwithanyludicrousidea!Well,afterall,everythinghasitsfair,aswellasitsseamyside;andtrulyIdonotseewhytheBaron’sboot-jackmaynotstandasfairinheraldyasthewater-buckets,waggons,cartwheels,plough-socks,shuttles,candle-sticks,andotherordinaries,conveyingideasofanythingsavechivalry,whichappearinthearmsofsomeofourmostancientgentry。’’This,however,isanepisodeinrespecttotheprincipalstory。
