  Beautifulaswasthatoldversion,therewasabundantreasonforarevision。Theprogressofbiblicalscholarshiphadrevealedmultitudesofimperfectionsandnotafewgrosserrorsintheworkoftheearlytranslators,andthese,ifuncorrected,weresuretobringthesacredvolumeintodiscredit。

  TheworkingoftheseandotherlawsgoverningtheevolutionofsacredliteratureisveryclearlyseeninthegreatrabbinicalschoolswhichflourishedatJerusalem,Tiberias,andelsewhere,afterthereturnoftheJewsfromtheBabyloniancaptivity,andespeciallyasweapproachthetimeofChrist。TheseschoolsdevelopedasubtletyinthestudyoftheOldTestamentwhichseemsalmostpreternatural。Theresultantsystemwasmainlyajugglerywithwords,phrases,andnumbers,whichfinallybecamea“sacredscience。”withvariousrecogniseddepartments,inwhichinterpretationwascarriedonsometimesbyattachinganumericalvaluetoletters;sometimesbyinterchangeoflettersfromdifferentlyarrangedalphabets;sometimesbythemakingofnewtextsoutoftheinitiallettersoftheold;andwithever-increasingsubtlety。
