  Onemayseemanywhiskingaboutintheclearsunshineinpatchesamongthegreenglancingleaves;butthereareinvisiblemyriadsworkingwithnever-tiringmandiblesonleaves,andstalks,andbeneaththesoilTheyareallbrimfulofenjoymentIndeed,theuniversalityoforganiclifemaybecalledamantleofhappyexistenceencirclingtheworld,andimpartstheideaofitsbeingcausedbytheconsciousnessofourbenignantFather’ssmileonalltheworksofHishands。

  Theblackpossessesamoresavagenature,and,liketheill-naturedingeneral,isneverfoundwithanounceoffatinitsbody。

  Fromitsgreaterfiercenessandwariness,itholdsitsplaceinadistrictmuchlongerthanitsmoretimidandbetter-conditionedneighbor。

  TheBatokahavenonameforthegiraffeortheostrichintheirlanguage;

  yet,astheformerexistsinconsiderablenumbersintheangleformedbytheLeeambyeandChobe,theymayhavecomefromthenorthalongthewesternridgeTheChobewouldseemtohavebeentoonarrowtoactasanobstacletothegiraffe,supposingittohavecomeintothatdistrictfromthesouth;butthebroadriverintowhichthatstreamflowsseemsalwaystohavepresentedanimpassablebarriertoboththegiraffeandtheostrich,thoughtheyaboundonitssouthernborder,bothintheKalahariDesertandthecountryofMashona。
