  Thetendershootsoftheevergreentreesonthesouthsidebecomeasifscorched;theleavesofmanioc,pumpkins,andothertenderplantsarekilled;whilethesamekinds,inspotsshelteredbyforests,continuegreenthroughthewholeyearAlltheinteriorofSouthAfricahasadistinctwinterofcold,varyinginintensitywiththelatitudes。

  andintheeveningsthewhiteantsswarmbythousandsAstreamofthemisseentorushoutofahole,and,afterflyingoneortwohundredyards,theydescend;andiftheylightuponapieceofsoilproperforthecommencementofanewcolony,theybenduptheirtails,unhooktheirwings,and,leavingthemonthesurface,quicklybegintheirminingoperationsIfanattemptismadetoseparatethewingsfromthebodybydrawingthemawaybackward,theyseemasifhookedintothebody,andtearawaylargeportionsoftheinsect;

  butifturnedforward,astheantitselfdoes,theysnapoffwiththegreatesteaseIndeed,theyseemformedonlytoservetheinsectinitsshortflighttoanewhabitation,andthentobethrownaside。
