  “Now,mydear,Iamtiredtodeath,andIamnotgoingtositthroughalongtabled’hote。Iwantyoutosendmeupasimplebeefsteakandacupofteatoourrooms;andIdon’twantyoutocomenearforhours;becauseIintendtotakeawholeafternoonnap。Youcankeepallthemapsandplans,andguides,andyouhadbettergoandseewhattheVolksfestislike;itwillgiveyousomenotionofthepartthepeoplearereallytakinginallthisofficialcelebration,andyouknowIdon’tcare。

  Kenbyhadseenthemarrivefromwherehesatatthereading-roomwindow,waitingforthedinnerhour,andhadmeanttorushoutandgreetMrs。

  KenbyorderedabottleofoneofthefamousWurzburgwinesfortheirmutualconsolationinherabsence,andinthefriendlinesswhichitspromotedtheyagreedtospendtheafternoontogether。Nomanissoinveterateahusbandasnottotakekindlyanoccasionalreleasetobachelorcompanionship,andbeforethedinnerwasovertheyagreedthattheywouldgototheVolksfest,andgetsomenotionofthepopularlifeandamusementsofWurzburg,whichwasoneofthefewplaceswhereKenbyhadneverbeenbefore;andtheyagreedthattheywouldwalk。
