  WhereverithadobeyedanacademicintentionitseemedtoMarchpoorandcoarse,asinthebronzefountainbesidetheChurchofSt。Lawrence。Thewaterspinsfromthepoutedbreastsofthebeautifulfiguresinstreamsthatcrossandinterlaceafterafancytrivialandgross;butinthebaseofthechurchthereisatime-wornGethsemane,exquisitelyaffectinginitssimple-heartedtruth。Thelongageshavemadeitevenmoreaffectingthanthesculptorimaginedit;theyhaveblurredthefacesandfiguresinpassingtilltheirfeaturesarescarcelydistinguishable;andthesleepingapostlesseemtohavedreamedthemselvesbackintothemother-

  marble。Itisofthesametraditionandimpulsewiththatsupremegloryofthenativesculpture,theineffabletabernacleofAdamKrafft,whichclimbsacolumnofthechurchwithin,amiracleofrichlycarvenstory;

  andnodoubtiftherewereaNurembergsculptordoinggreatthingstoday,hisworkwouldbeofkindredinspiration。

  Thedescendantsoftheoldpatricianwhoorderedthetabernacleatratherahardbargainfromtheartiststillworshiponthefloorbelow,andthedescendantsofhisneighborpatricianshavetheirseatsinthepewsabout,andtheirnamescutintheproprietaryplatesonthepew-tops。
