  Whereupon,andthenamewithinfinitehardbreathingbeingsigned,thecommissionerwouldproceedtofillintheman’sappearance,height,etc。,ontheofficialform。Inthistaskofliteraryportraitureheseemedtorelywhollyupontemperament;

  forIcouldnotperceivehimtocastoneglanceonanyofhismodels。Hewasassisted,however,byarunningcommentaryfromthecaptain:“Hairblueandeyesred,nosefivefootseven,andstaturebroken“——jestsasold,presumably,astheAmericanmarine;and,likethesimilarpleasantriesofthebilliardboard,perenniallyrelished。ThehighestnoteofhumourwasreachedinthecaseoftheChinesecook,whowasshippedunderthenameof“OneLung。”tothesoundofhisownprotestsandtheself-approvingchucklesofthefunctionary。

  “Now,captain。”saidthelatter,whenthemenweregone,andhehadbundleduphispapers,“thelawrequiresyoutocarryaslop-chestandachestofmedicines。”
