  Augustus,too,Iremember,approachedmewithaseriousair,andrequestedmetolendhimapocket-comb,ashishairwasfulloffish-scales,andhewishedtogetthemoutbeforegoingonshore。

  Parkerappearedsomewhatlessaffected,andurgedmetodiveatrandomintothecabin,andbringupanyarticlewhichmightcometohand。TothisIconsented,and,inthefirstattempt,afterstayingunderafullminute,broughtupasmallleathertrunkbelongingtoCaptainBarnard。Thiswasimmediatelyopenedinthefainthopethatitmightcontainsomethingtoeatordrink。Wefoundnothing,however,exceptaboxofrazorsandtwolinenshirts。Inowwentdownagain,andreturnedwithoutanysuccess。AsmyheadcameabovewaterIheardacrashondeck,and,upongettingup,sawthatmycompanionshadungratefullytakenadvantageofmyabsencetodrinktheremainderofthewine,havingletthebottlefallintheendeavourtoreplaceitbeforeIsawthem。Iremonstratedwiththemontheheartlessnessoftheirconduct,whenAugustusburstintotears。Theothertwoendeavouredtolaughthematteroffasajoke,butIhopeneveragaintobeholdlaughterofsuchaspecies:thedistortionofcountenancewasabsolutelyfrightful。Indeed,itwasapparentthatthestimulus,intheemptystateoftheirstomachs,hadtakeninstantandviolenteffect,andthattheywereallexceedinglyintoxicated。WithgreatdifficultyIprevaileduponthemtoliedown,whentheyfellverysoonintoaheavyslumber,accompaniedwithloudstertorousbreathing。
