  Letussuppose,gentlereader,thatitisnowtheyearoftheworldthreethousandeighthundredandthirty,andletus,forafewminutes,imagineourselvesatthatmostgrotesquehabitationofman,theremarkablecityofAntioch。Tobesuretherewere,inSyriaandothercountries,sixteencitiesofthatappellation,besidestheonetowhichImoreparticularlyallude。ButoursisthatwhichwentbythenameofAntiochiaEpidaphne,fromitsvicinitytothelittlevillageofDaphne,wherestoodatempletothatdivinity。ItwasbuiltalthoughaboutthismatterthereissomedisputebySeleucusNicanor,thefirstkingofthecountryafterAlexandertheGreat,inmemoryofhisfatherAntiochus,andbecameimmediatelytheresidenceoftheSyrianmonarchy。IntheflourishingtimesoftheRomanEmpire,itwastheordinarystationoftheprefectoftheeasternprovinces;
