  Hereandtherethelanewassplashedwithit,butforthemostpartitwasalreadyquiteshadowybeneaththemaples,andthespacesunderthefirswerefilledwithaclearvioletdusklikeairywine。Thewindswereoutintheirtops,andthereisnosweetermusiconearththanthatwhichthewindmakesinthefirtreesatevening。

  Thecowsswungplacidlydownthelane,andAnnefollowedthemdreamily,repeatingaloudthebattlecantofromMARMION——whichhadalsobeenpartoftheirEnglishcoursetheprecedingwinterandwhichMissStacyhadmadethemlearnoffbyheart——andexultinginitsrushinglinesandtheclashofspearsinitsimagery。WhenshecametothelinesThestubbornspearsmenstillmadegoodTheirdarkimpenetrablewood,shestoppedinecstasytoshuthereyesthatshemightthebetterfancyherselfoneofthatheroicring。WhensheopenedthemagainitwastobeholdDianacomingthroughthegatethatledintotheBarryfieldandlookingsoimportantthatAnneinstantlydivinedtherewasnewstobetold。Butbetraytooeagercuriosityshewouldnot。

  AnnewasdressedbythetimeMatthewhadthefireonandhadthebreakfastreadywhenMarillacamedown,butforherownpartwasmuchtooexcitedtoeat。Afterbreakfastthejauntynewcapandjacketweredonned,andAnnehastenedoverthebrookandupthroughthefirstoOrchardSlope。Mr。BarryandDianawerewaitingforher,andtheyweresoonontheroad。
