  SIR,——AletterfromMr。Booth-Clibborn,datedJanuary3rd,appearedinthe“Times“ofyesterday。Thiselaboratedocumentoccupiesthreecolumnsofsmallprint——spaceenough,assuredly,foraneffectualreplytothesevenlettersofminetowhichthewriterrefers,ifanysuchwereforthcoming。Mr。Booth-Clibbornsignshimself“CommissioneroftheSalvationArmyforFranceandSwitzerland。”buthesaysthatheacceptsmy“challenge“withouttheknowledgeofhischiefs。

  TheprefaceisdatedApril1889。Accordingtothestatementinthe“TorontoTelegram“whichMr。“Commissioner“Booth-Clibborndoesnotdaretodispute,hisCanadianfellow-“Commissioner“boughtanddestroyedthewholeeditionof“TheNewPapacy“abouttheendofthethirdweekinApril。Itisclearthatthewriteroftheparagraphquotedfromtheprefacewaswelloutofa“hotfit。”ifhehadeverbeeninone,whilehehadnotenteredonthestageofrepentancewithinthreeweeksofthattime。Mr。“Commissioner“Booth-Clibborn’sscandalousinsinuationsthatMr。Sumnerwasbribedby“afewsovereigns。”andthathewas“boughtoff。”inthefaceofhisownadmissionthatMr。Sumner“offeredtoorderitssuppressionifthearmywouldpaythecostsalreadyincurred,andwhichhewasunabletobear“isacrucialexampleofthatJesuitrywithwhichtheofficialsofthearmyhavebeensofrequentlycharged。

  ThusitappearsthattheletterwhichMr。Steadwrotetomeonthe13thofJanuarydoesnotcontainonewordofthatwhichhewaysitcontains,inthestatementwhichappearsinthe“Times“to-day。

  Moreover,theletterofminetowhichMr。Steadrefersinhisfirstcommunicationtomeisnottheletterwhichappearedonthe13th,ashestates,butthatwhichyoupublishedonDecember27th,1890。

  Therefore,itisnottruethatMr。Steadwrote“atonce。”Onthecontrary,heallowednearlyafortnighttoelapsebeforeheaddressedmeonthe10thofJanuary1891。Furthermore,Mr。Steadsuppressesthefactthat,sincethe13thofJanuary,hehashadinhispossessionmyoffertopublishhisversionofthestory;andheleadsthereadertosupposethatmyonlyanswerwasthathe“hadbetterwriteto[311]youdirect。Allthewhile,Mr。SteadknowsperfectlywellthatIwaswithheldfrommakingpublicuseofhisletterofthe10thbynothingbutmyscruplesaboutusingadocumentwhichwasmarked“private“;andthathedidnotgivemeleavetoquotehisletterofthe10thofJanuaryuntilafterhehadwrittenthatwhichappearedyesterday。

  AndIadd:——

  Astothesubject-matterofMr。Stead’sletter,thepointwhichhewishestoproveappearstobethis——thatMr。BramwellBoothdidnotmakeafalsestatement,butthathewithheldfromtheofficersofjustice,pursuingamostseriouscriminalinquiry,afactofgraveimportance,whichlaywithinhisownknowledge。AndthisbecausehehadpromisedMr。Steadtokeepthefactsecret。Inshort,Mr。BramwellBoothdidnotsaywhatwaswrong;buthedidwhatwaswrong。

  Iwilltakecaretogiveeveryweighttothecorrection。Mostpeople,Ithink,willconsiderthatoneofthe“mainpillarsofmyargument。”

  asMr。Steadispleasedtocallthem,hasbecomeverymuchstrengthened。
