  Recoveringfromhisstupefaction,theyoungmanwasabouttobeghiscousin\'spardonforhisirreverence,whenheobservedthatRosaritowasweeping。Fixingonhercousinalookoffriendlyandgentlereproof,shesaid:

  PepeReywasdisturbedandperplexed,enragedwithhimselfandeveryoneelse;hetriedinvaintoimaginewhatcouldbetheconflictthathadarisen,inspiteofhimself,betweenhisideasandtheideasofhisaunt\'sfriends。Thoughtfulandsad,foreseeingfuturediscord,heremainedforashorttimesittingonthebenchinthesummer-house,hischinrestingonhisbreast,hisforeheadgatheredinafrown,hishandsclasped。Hethoughthimselfalone。

  Suddenlyheheardagayvoicehummingtherefrainofasongfromazarzuela。HelookedupandsawDonJacintosittingintheoppositecornerofthesummer-house。

  “Ah,SenordeRey!“saidtheyouthabruptly,“onedoesnotoffendwithimpunitythereligioussentimentsofthegreatmajorityofanation。Ifyoudoubtit,considerwhathappenedinthefirstFrenchrevolution。”

  WhenPepeheardthebuzzingofthisinsecthisirritationincreased。

  Neverthelesstherewasnoangerinhissoultowardtheyouthfuldoctoroflaws。Thelatterannoyedhim,asaflymightannoyhim,butnothingmore。Reyfelttheirritationwhicheveryimportunatebeinginspires,andwiththeairofonewhobrushesawayabuzzingdrone,heanswered:

  DonaPerfectahadpromisedinhermagnanimitytohelphimtofreehimselffromthesedisgracefulplotsbymeansofanamicablearrangement;butthedayspassed,andthegoodofficesoftheexemplaryladyhadproducednoresultwhatever。Theclaimsmultipliedwiththedangerousswiftnessofaviolentdisease。PepeReypassedhourafterhouratcourt,makingdeclarationsandansweringthesamequestionsoverandoveragain,andwhenhereturnedhometiredandangry,thereappearedbeforehimthesharpfeaturesandgrotesquefaceofthenotary,whohadbroughthimathickbundleofstampedpapersfullofhorribleformulas——thathemightbestudyingthequestion。
