  “Iinfer,therefore,thatyourinstructionsarenotfromtheempress,butfromtheco-regent,theEmperorJoseph,whohasbetakenhimselftotheAustriancamp。”

  Butifyouwillbethehead,MonsieurleBaron,youcannotrepresentthestomachalso,for,asIhavebeentold,itonlyexistsinthosesoftanimalsoftheseawhoseheadisintheirstomach,andwhichthinkanddigestatthesametime。Austriadoesnotbelongtothisclass,buthasratheraveryhardandimpenetrableshell。Wecannotletherdevourasstomachwhatastheheadshehaschosenasbooty。

  “Alsoyourmajesty\'sPolishsubjects,asmaybeexpected,“addedBaronyonThugut。

  “MyPolishsubjectsaretheminimumportion,andareaboutinproportiontotheGermanpopulationasinimperialAustriatheGermanistotheforeign。Butenoughofthis;ifIdonotrecognizethisasacivilwar,itisindeedagreatmisfortune。Iwoulddoeverythingtoavoidit——everythingcompatiblewiththehonorandgloryofmyhouse,aswellasthatofGermanyingeneral。ThereforeletusknowtheViewsoftheempress-queen!“

  Thekingsmiled,glancingattheretreatingfigureofthebaron,andapproachedthewindowtopeepthroughthelittlegreenglasspanestoseehimashepassedby。

  “Aslyfox,“saidhe,smiling,“butIwillprovetohimthatweunderstandfox-hunting,andarenotdeceivedbycunningfeints。”

  “Willyourmajestyreallybreakupto-day?“askedVonHerzberg,uponreturning。
