  4ThemarginalusercostIattachimportancetoincludingthisfactorbecauseithelpstobridgethediscontinuitybetweenanincreaseofoutputuptoshort-periodcapacityandanincreaseofoutputinvolvinganincreasebeyondthecapacityassumedinshort-periodconditions;and5Thedegreeoftheimperfectionofcompetition。Anditappearsthat,forreasonswhicharenotyetclear,thesefactorstakeninconjunctionhavenosignificantinfluenceonthedistributionbetweenlabourandcapitaloftheincomeresultingfromtheoutput。Whateveramorecompleteinquiryintotheproblemmaybringforth,itisevidentthatMrDunlop,MrTarshisandDrKaleckihavegivenusmuchtothinkabout,andhaveseriouslyshakenthefundamentalassumptionsonwhichtheshort-periodtheoryofdistributionhasbeenbasedhitherto;¾itseemsthatforpracticalpurposesadifferentsetofsimplificationsfromthoseadoptedhithertoarepreferable。MeanwhileIamcomfortedbythefactthattheirconclusionstendtoconfirmtheideathatthecausesofshort-periodfluctuationaretobefoundinchangesinthedemandforlabour,andnotinchangesinitsreal-supplyprice;thoughIcomplainalittlethatIinparticularshouldbecriticisedforconcedingalittletotheotherviewbyadmittingthat,whenthechangesineffectivedemandtowhichImyselfattachimportancehavebroughtaboutachangeinthelevelofoutput,thereal-supplypriceforlabourwouldinfactchangeinthedirectionassumedbythetheoryIamopposing¾asifIwasthe[Page412]THE
