  RightReverendFirmianhadnotbeenlonginSalzburgtillhesmeltouttheCrypto—Protestantism,anddeterminedtohaulitforthfromthemythicalconditionintothepractical;andinfact,toseehislaw—beaglesthereworryittodeathastheyought。HencetherumorsthathadrisenoverGermany,in1729:Law—terrierspenetratingintohumancottagesinthoseremoteSalzburgvalleys,smellingoutsomeGermanBibleordevoutBook,makinglistsofBible—readingcottagers;halingthemtotheRightReverendFather—
