Atsuchapacetheyascendedthegentlehillwehavementioned,andlookingfromthetop,hadthepleasuretoseethatthepartywhichhadleftDonningtonbeforethemwereinthelittlevalleyorbottomontheotherside,wheretheroadwastraversedbyarivulet,besidewhichwasacottageortwo。Inthisplacetheyseemedtohavemadeapause,whichgaveWaylandthehopeofjoiningthem,andbecomingapartoftheircompany,ereVarneyshouldovertakethem。Hewasthemoreanxious,ashiscompanion,thoughshemadenocomplaints,andexpressednofear,begantolooksodeadlypalethathewasafraidshemightdropfromherhorse。Notwithstandingthissymptomofdecayingstrength,shepushedonherpalfreysobrisklythattheyjoinedthepartyinthebottomofthevalleyereVarneyappearedonthetopofthegentleeminencewhichtheyhaddescended。
