  Anindistinctrecollectionoftheveryprettylittletale,called\"TheBellows—Mender,\"suggestedtheplotofthisDrama。

  Theincidentsare,however,greatlyalteredfromthoseinthetale,andthecharactersentirelyre—cast。

  HavinglonghadawishtoillustratecertainperiodsoftheFrenchhistory,so,intheselectionofthedateinwhichthescenesofthisplayarelaid,IsawthattheeraoftheRepublicwasthatinwhichtheincidentswererenderedmostprobable,inwhichtheprobationarycareeroftheherocouldwellbemadesufficientlyrapidfordramaticeffect,andinwhichthecharacterofthetimeitselfwasdepictedbytheagenciesnecessarytotheconductofthenarrative。

  ForduringtheearlyyearsofthefirstandmostbrilliantsuccessesoftheFrenchRepublic,inthegeneralfermentofsociety,andthebriefequalizationofranks,Claude\'shigh—placedlove;
