  Mackinnonwasobligedtodeclarethathethoughthiswifewouldobject;andfromthattimeforthheandMrs。Talboysceasedtobeverycloseintheirfriendship。ShestillcametothehouseeverySundayevening,stillrefreshedherselfatthefountainsofhisliteraryrills;butherspecialpropheciesfromhenceforthwerepouredintootherears。AnditsohappenedthatO\'Briennowbecameherchiefally。Idonotrememberthatshetroubledherselfmuchfurtherwiththecherubangelsorwiththeirmother;andIaminclinedtothinkthat,takingupwarmly,asshedid,thestoryofO\'Brien\'smatrimonialwrongs,sheforgotthelittlehistoryoftheBrowns。Bethatasitmay,Mrs。TalboysandO\'Briennowbecamestrictlyconfidential,andshewouldenlargebythehalf-hourtogetheronthemiseriesofherfriend\'sposition,toanyonewhomshecouldgettohearher。
