  TheancientandpopulardoctrineoftheMillenniumwasintimatelyconnectedwiththesecondcomingofChrist。Astheworksofthecreationhadbeenfinishedinsixdays,theirdurationintheirpresentstate,accordingtoatraditionwhichwasattributedtotheprophetElijah,wasfixedtosixthousandyears。^61Bythesameanalogyitwasinferred,thatthislongperiodoflaborandcontention,whichwasnowalmostelapsed,^62
