  ThelettersofMacrinushadcondescendedtoinformthesenateoftheslightdisturbanceoccasionedbyanimpostorinSyria,andadecreeimmediatelypassed,declaringtherebelandhisfamilypublicenemies;withapromiseofpardon,however,tosuchofhisdeludedadherentsasshouldmerititbyanimmediatereturntotheirduty。DuringthetwentydaysthatelapsedfromthedeclarationofthevictoryofAntoninus,forinsoshortanintervalwasthefateoftheRomanworlddecided,thecapitalandtheprovinces,moreespeciallythoseoftheEast,weredistractedwithhopesandfears,agitatedwithtumult,andstainedwithauselesseffusionofcivilblood,sincewhosoeveroftherivalsprevailedinSyriamustreignovertheempire。Thespeciouslettersinwhichtheyoungconquerorannouncedhisvictorytotheobedientsenatewerefilledwithprofessionsofvirtueandmoderation;theshiningexamplesofMarcusandAugustus,heshouldeverconsiderasthegreatruleofhisadministration;andheaffectedtodwellwithprideonthestrikingresemblanceofhisownageandfortuneswiththoseofAugustus,whointheearliestyouthhadrevenged,byasuccessfulwar,themurderofhisfather。ByadoptingthestyleofMarcusAureliusAntoninus,sonofAntoninusandgrandsonofSeverus,hetacitlyassertedhishereditaryclaimtotheempire;but,byassumingthetribunitianandproconsularpowersbeforetheyhadbeenconferredonhimbyadecreeofthesenate,heoffendedthedelicacyofRomanprejudice。ThisnewandinjudiciousviolationoftheconstitutionwasprobablydictatedeitherbytheignoranceofhisSyriancourtiers,orthefiercedisdainofhismilitaryfollowers。^50
