  Itwasinthegoodweatherthatfollowed,thathelefttheblacksatwork,onemorning,andwithashot-gunacrosshispommelrodeoffafterpigeons。Twohourslater,oneofthehouse-boys,breathlessandscratchedranhimdownwiththenewsthattheMartha,theFlibberty-Gibbet,andtheEmilywereheadinginfortheanchorage。

  Comingintothecompoundfromtherear,Sheldoncouldseenothinguntilherodearoundthecornerofthebungalow。Thenhesaweverythingatonce——first,aglimpseatthesea,wheretheMarthafloatedhugealongsidethecutterandtheketchwhichhadrescuedher;and,next,thegroundinfrontoftheverandasteps,whereagreatcrowdoffresh-caughtcannibalsstoodatattention。Fromthefactthateachwasattiredinanew,snow-whitelava-lava,Sheldonknewthattheywererecruits。Partwayupthesteps,oneofthemwasjustbackingdownintothecrowd,whileanother,calledoutbyname,wascomingup。ItwasJoan\'svoicethathadcalledhim,andSheldonreinedinhishorseandwatched。Shesatattheheadofthesteps,behindatable,betweenMunsterandhiswhitemate,thethreeofthemcheckinglonglists,Joanaskingthequestionsandwritingtheanswersinthebig,red-covered,Berandelabour-
