  Mr。Rushbrookdrewhiswatchfromhispocket,anddeliberatelydivestedhimselfofhisboots,coat,waistcoat,andcravat。Thenrollinghimselfinafleecy,blanket-likerugwithsomethingofthehabitualdexterityofafrontiersman,hethrewhimselfonhiscouch,closedhiseyes,andwentinstantlytosleep。Lyingthere,heappearedtobeamancomfortablymiddle-aged,withthickiron-

  grayhairthatmighthavecurledhadheencouragedsuchinclination;askinroughenedanddarkenedbyexternalhardshipsandexposure,butfreefromtaintofinnerviceorexcess,andindistinctivefeaturesredeemedbyasingularlyhandsomemouth。Asthelowerpartofthefacewaspartlyhiddenbyadensebutclosely-croppedbeard,itisprobablethatthedelicateoutlinesofhislipshadgainedsomethingfromtheirframing。

  Foritwasremarkablethateventhevariousartists,musicians,orators,andpoetswhomMaecenashadgatheredinhiscoolbusinessfashionunderthatroof,allseemedtobecome,bycontrastwithsurroundingNature,asnewandartificialasthehouse,andaspowerlesstoassertthemselvesagainstitsinfluence。

  HewasstillsleepingwhenJamesre-enteredtheroom,butawokepromptlyatthesoundofhisvoice。Inafewmomentshehadrearrangedhisscarcelydisorderedtoilette,andsteppedoutrefreshedandobservantintothehall。Theguestswerestillabsentfromthatpartofthebuilding,andhewalkedleisurelypastthecarelesslyopeneddoorsoftheroomstheyhadleft。Everywherehemetthesameglaringornamentationandcolor,thesamegarishnessoftreatment,thesameinharmoniousextravaganceoffurniture,andeverywherethesametroubledacceptanceofitbytheinmates,orthesamesenseoftemporaryandrestrictedtenancy。
