  ProsperityhadsettledupontheplainsofTasajara.NotonlyhadtheembarcaderoemergedfromthetulesofTasajaraCreekasathrivingtownofsteamboatwharves,warehouses,andoutlyingmillsandfactories,butinfiveyearsthetransformingrailroadhadpenetratedthegreatplainitselfandrevealeditsundevelopedfertility.Thelow-lyinglandsthathadbeenyearlyoverflowedbythecreek,nowdrainedandcultivated,yieldedtreasuresofwheatandbarleythatwereapparentlyinexhaustible.EventhehelplessindolenceofSidonhadbeensurprisedintoactivityandchange.

  Therewasnothingleftofthestragglingsettlementtorecallitsformeraspect.ThesiteofHarkutt\'soldstoreanddwellingwaslostandforgotteninthenewmillandgranarythatrosealongthebanksofthecreek.Decayleavesruinandtracesforthememorytolingerover;prosperityisunrelentinginitscompleteandsmilingobliterationofthepast.

  ButTasajaraCity,astheembarcaderowasnowcalled,hadnopreviousrecord,andeventheformerexistenceofanactualsettlerliketheforgottenElijahCurtiswasunknowntothepresentinhabitants.ItwasDanielHarkutt\'sideacarriedoutinDanielHarkutt\'sland,withDanielHarkutt\'scapitalandenergy.ButDanielHarkutthadbecomeDanielHarcourt,andHarcourtAvenue,HarcourtSquare,andHarcourtHouse,ostentatiouslyproclaimedthenewspellingofhispatronymic.Whenthechangewasmadeandforwhatreason,whosuggesteditandunderwhatauthority,werenoteasytodetermine,asthesignonhisformerstorehadbornenothingbutthelegend,GoodsandProvisions,andhisnamedidnotappearonwrittenrecorduntilaftertheoccupationofTasajara;
