  Secondly,thesemissionarieswouldgradually,andwithoutcreatingsuspicionorexcitingalarm,introducearudimentarycleanlinessamongthenobility,andfromthemitwouldworkdowntothepeople,ifthepriestscouldbekeptquiet.ThiswouldunderminetheChurch.Imeanwouldbeasteptowardthat.Next,education——next,freedom——andthenshewouldbegintocrumble.

  Gallonaftergallonofwineandmeaddisappeared,andeverybodygotcomfortable,thenhappy,thensparklinglyjoyous——bothsexes,——andbyandbyprettynoisy.Mentoldanecdotesthatwereterrifictohear,butnobodyblushed;

  Suddenly,evenwhilethepriestwasliftinghishands,andallconsciousheadswerebowedinreverentexpectationofthecomingblessing,thereappearedunderthearchofthefar-offdooratthebottomofthehallanoldandbentandwhite-hairedlady,leaninguponacrutch-stick;andsheliftedthestickandpointedittowardthequeenandcriedout:
