  OnherwaybacktotheCourthereyessawonlythewhiteroadbeforeherfeetasshewalked。Shedidnotliftthemuntilshefoundherselfpassingthelych—gateattheentrancetothechurchyard。Thensuddenlyshelookedupatthesquaregreystonetowerwherethebellshung,andfromwhichtheycalledthevillagetochurch,orchimedforweddings——orgaveslowlyforthtothesilentaironeheavy,regularstrokeafteranother。Shelookedandshuddered,andspokealoudwithacurious,passionateimploring,likeachild’s。
