DEARSIR，——EncouragedbythesmallacquaintancewhichIhadthepleasureofhavingcontractedwithyouduringyourresidenceinthiscountry，Itakethelibertyofmakingthepresentapplicationtoyou。IunderstoodyouwererelatedtothegentlemanofyournameMr。JamesMcPherson，towhomtheworldissomuchindebtedfortheelegantcollection，arrangement，andtranslationofOssian’spoems。
Thesepieceshavebeenandwill，Ithink，duringmylife，continuetobetomethesourcesofdailypleasures。Thetenderandthesublimeemotionsofthemindwereneverbeforesowroughtupbythehumanhand。IamnotashamedtoownthatIthinkthisrudebardoftheNorththegreatestpoetthathaseverexisted。Merelyforthepleasureofreadinghisworks，Iambecomedesirousoflearningthelanguageinwhichhesung，andofpossessinghissongsintheiroriginalform。Mr。McPherson，Ithink，informsusheispossessedoftheoriginals。Indeed，agentlemanhaslatelytoldmehehadseentheminprint；butIamafraidhehasmistakenaspecimenfromTemora，annexedtosomeoftheeditionsofthetranslation，forthewholeworks。Iftheyareprinted，itwillabridgemyrequestandyourtrouble，tothesendingmeaprintedcopy；butiftherebemoresuch，mypetitionis，thatyouwouldbesogoodastouseyourinterestwithMr。McPhersontoobtainleavetotakeamanuscriptcopyofthem，andprocureittobedone。Iwouldchooseitinafair，roundhand，onfinepaper，withagoodmargin，boundinparchmentsaselegantlyaspossible，letteredontheback，andmarbledorgiltontheedgesoftheleaves。Iwouldnotregardexpenseindoingthis。

hadlaidbyforyou。Thecaptwasafraidtotakemoreonboardlestitshoulddrawuponhimtheofficersofthecustoms。Theremainingthreedoz。thereforeIproposetosendbyCap；attDrewbelongingtothesamemercantilehouse，whoisjustarrivedhere。ThatwhichgoesbyAselbywillbedeliveredbyhimtoyourorder，theresiduebyDrew，orbyFarrell&Jones，Iknownotwhichasyet。Ihopeyouwillfinditfineasitcametomegenuinefromtheisland&hasbeenkeptinmyowncellareightyears。Withinthisweekwehavereceivedtheunhappynewsofanactionofconsiderablemagnitude，betweentheKing’stroopsandourbrethrenofBoston，inwhichitissaidfivehundredoftheformer，withtheEarlofPercy，areslain。Thatsuchanactionhasoccurred，isundoubted，thoughperhapsthecircumstancesmaynothavereacheduswithtruth。Thisaccidenthascutoffourlasthopeofreconciliation，andaphrensyofrevengeseemstohaveseizedallranksofpeople。Itisalamentablecircumstance，thattheonlymediatorypower，acknowledgedbybothparties，insteadofleadingtoareconciliationofhisdividedpeople，shouldpursuetheincendiarypurposeofstillblowinguptheflames，aswefindhimconstantlydoing，ineveryspeechandpublicdeclaration。Thismay，perhaps，beintendedtointimidateintoacquiescence，buttheeffecthasbeenmostunfortunatelyotherwise。
