  DEARSIR,——EncouragedbythesmallacquaintancewhichIhadthepleasureofhavingcontractedwithyouduringyourresidenceinthiscountry,Itakethelibertyofmakingthepresentapplicationtoyou。IunderstoodyouwererelatedtothegentlemanofyournameMr。JamesMcPherson,towhomtheworldissomuchindebtedfortheelegantcollection,arrangement,andtranslationofOssian’spoems。

  Thesepieceshavebeenandwill,Ithink,duringmylife,continuetobetomethesourcesofdailypleasures。Thetenderandthesublimeemotionsofthemindwereneverbeforesowroughtupbythehumanhand。IamnotashamedtoownthatIthinkthisrudebardoftheNorththegreatestpoetthathaseverexisted。Merelyforthepleasureofreadinghisworks,Iambecomedesirousoflearningthelanguageinwhichhesung,andofpossessinghissongsintheiroriginalform。Mr。McPherson,Ithink,informsusheispossessedoftheoriginals。Indeed,agentlemanhaslatelytoldmehehadseentheminprint;butIamafraidhehasmistakenaspecimenfromTemora,annexedtosomeoftheeditionsofthetranslation,forthewholeworks。Iftheyareprinted,itwillabridgemyrequestandyourtrouble,tothesendingmeaprintedcopy;butiftherebemoresuch,mypetitionis,thatyouwouldbesogoodastouseyourinterestwithMr。McPhersontoobtainleavetotakeamanuscriptcopyofthem,andprocureittobedone。Iwouldchooseitinafair,roundhand,onfinepaper,withagoodmargin,boundinparchmentsaselegantlyaspossible,letteredontheback,andmarbledorgiltontheedgesoftheleaves。Iwouldnotregardexpenseindoingthis。

  Iwouldfurtherbegthefavorofyoutogivemeacatalogueofthebookswritteninthatlanguage,andtosendmesuchofthemasmaybenecessaryforlearningit。Thesewill,ofcourse,includeagrammaranddictionary。Thecostofthese,aswellasthecopyofOssian,willbeforme,ondemand,answeredbyMr。AlexanderMcCaul,sometimeofVirginia,merchant,butnowofGlasgow,orbyyourfriendMr。NinianMinzees,ofRichmond,inVirginia,towhosecarethebooksmaybesent。Youcan,perhaps,tellmewhetherwemayeverhopetoseeanymoreofthoseCelticpiecespublished。Manuscriptcopiesofanywhichareinprint,itwouldatanytimegivemethegreatesthappinesstoreceive。Theglowofonewarmthoughtistomeworthmorethanmoney。Ihearwithpleasurefromyourfriendthatyourpaththroughlifeislikelytobesmoothedbysuccess。Iwishthebusinessandthepleasuresofyoursituationwouldadmitleisurenowandthentoscribblealinetoonewhowishesyoueveryfelicity,andwouldwillinglymerittheappellationof,dearsir,Yourfriendandhumbleservant。

  DEARSIR,——IhadthepleasurebyagentlemanwhosawyouatBirminghamtohearofyourwelfare。ByCapt。AselbyoftheTrue-patriotbelongingtoMessrs。Farrell&JonesofBristolIsendyou3doz。bottlesofMadeira,beingthehalfofapresentwhichI

  hadlaidbyforyou。Thecaptwasafraidtotakemoreonboardlestitshoulddrawuponhimtheofficersofthecustoms。Theremainingthreedoz。thereforeIproposetosendbyCap;attDrewbelongingtothesamemercantilehouse,whoisjustarrivedhere。ThatwhichgoesbyAselbywillbedeliveredbyhimtoyourorder,theresiduebyDrew,orbyFarrell&Jones,Iknownotwhichasyet。Ihopeyouwillfinditfineasitcametomegenuinefromtheisland&hasbeenkeptinmyowncellareightyears。Withinthisweekwehavereceivedtheunhappynewsofanactionofconsiderablemagnitude,betweentheKing’stroopsandourbrethrenofBoston,inwhichitissaidfivehundredoftheformer,withtheEarlofPercy,areslain。Thatsuchanactionhasoccurred,isundoubted,thoughperhapsthecircumstancesmaynothavereacheduswithtruth。Thisaccidenthascutoffourlasthopeofreconciliation,andaphrensyofrevengeseemstohaveseizedallranksofpeople。Itisalamentablecircumstance,thattheonlymediatorypower,acknowledgedbybothparties,insteadofleadingtoareconciliationofhisdividedpeople,shouldpursuetheincendiarypurposeofstillblowinguptheflames,aswefindhimconstantlydoing,ineveryspeechandpublicdeclaration。Thismay,perhaps,beintendedtointimidateintoacquiescence,buttheeffecthasbeenmostunfortunatelyotherwise。
