  Buttheearnestdesiretolookonbloodanddeath,isnotpeculiartothosedarkages;thoughinthegladiatorialexerciseofsinglecombatandgeneraltourney,theywerehabituatedtothebloodyspectacleofbravemenfailingbyeachother’shands。

  ThisenclosurewasformedonapieceoflevelgroundadjoiningtothePreceptory,whichhadbeenlevelledwithcare,fortheexerciseofmilitaryandchivalroussports。Itoccupiedthebrowofasoftandgentleeminence,wascarefullypalisadedaround,and,astheTemplarswillinglyinvitedspectatorstobewitnessesoftheirskillinfeatsofchivalry,wasamplysuppliedwithgalleriesandbenchesfortheiruse。

  Onthepresentoccasion,athronewaserectedfortheGrandMasterattheeastend,surroundedwithseatsofdistinctionforthePreceptorsandKnightsoftheOrder。Overthesefloatedthesacredstandard,called_LeBeau-seant_,whichwastheensign,asitsnamewasthebattle-cry,oftheTemplars。
