Iwasnowinformedthattheattempttodestroyusbypoison,andsubsequentlybyatreacherousattackatMasindi,wasmainlyduetotheintriguesofAbouSaood,whohadoriginallyadvisedKabbaRegatoresistmeshouldIarriveinhiscountry。ThistraitorAbouSaoodhadconsideredthatweshouldbecertainlymassacredwhenonceintheheartofUnyoro。HehadthereforeassumedadespoticcommandofFatikoandalltheneighbouringcountriesshortlyaftermydeparture;andhehadgivenorders`tothenativesandtothesheik,RotJarma,that”nosuppliesofcornshouldbeprovidedforMajorAbdullah’stroops。”
RotJarmahadbeenfaithfultothegovernment,andhispeoplehadcarriedcorntoMajorAbdullah。AbouSaoodhadthereforeorderedhismentoattackRotJarma。Theyhadaccordinglysurprisedhimwhilebelievingintheprotectionofthegovernment,andhadcapturedhiscattle,togetherwithanumberofslaves。Inthatattackthebrigandshadlostfivemen,whosegunshadbeensubsequentlytakentoKabbaRegaforsalebythenativeswehadseenatMasindi。
AbouSaoodthen,enragedatthelossoffivemen,togetherwiththeirguns,hadsentforWat-el-MekfromFaloro,andhadgivenhimthecommandabovethewell-knownAliHussein,withorderstocarryfireandswordthroughthecountry。
MajorAbdullahhadvainlyexpostulated。AbouSaoodhadpersonallythreatenedhim;andAliHusseinandanofficernamedLazim,withsomeothers,hadgonearmedintothegovernmentcamp,andhadactuallyseizednativeswhohadtakenrefugewithAbdullah,fromwhosehousetheywerethusdraggedbyforceindefianceofauthority。
WhenthenewsarrivedfromFoweerathatIhadpunishedSuleimanforthemurderoftheprisoner,bothAbouSaoodandhispeoplehaddeclared,thatthey”wouldsecureMajorAbdullahinaforkedpole,orsheba,andtreathiininasimilarmanner。”Theyhadalsothreatenedtoattackthegovernmentcamp。
