Inconversationwithmy”FortyThieves”Ihadsuggested,thatperhapsontheirarrivalatKhartoum,thegovernmentmightnotpermitthemtoretainsomanywivesintheregiment。TheSoudanisarealwayshappyiftheyhaveawifeandplentytoeatanddrink;thereforeCentralAfricawaspreferabletotheirtaste,wheretheycouldenjoydomesticblisswithayoungwife,insteadofsittinginthesultrybarracksofKhartoumasmelancholybachelors。
