  Shelleywasbusymakingalittleheapofherletters;whenthetoponeslidoffIreachedoverandputitbackforher。Shelookedstraightatme,andsmiledthemostwonderfulandthemostbeautifulsmileIeversawonanyone’sface,soIsaidtoher:

  Motherwenttoplanningwhatelseshouldbedone。

  NextmorningIwakenedlaughingsoftly,becausesomeonewasfussingwithmyhair,pattingmyface,andkissingme,soIputupmyarmsandpulledthatlovingpersondownonmypillow,andgavebacklittlehalf-asleepkisses,andslepton;butitwasShelley,andshegentlyshookmeandbeganrepeatingthatfoololdthingIhavebeenwakedupwithhalfthemorningsofmylife:

  UsuallyI’dhavegoneonsleeping,butShelleywassosweetandlovely,andshekissedmesohard,thatIremembereditwasgoingtobeamostexcitingday,soIcametoquickassnapandjumpedrightup,forIdidn’twanttomissasinglethingthatmighthappen。

  Thecarriagewasshiningwhenitcametothegate,sowasfather。
