  “Aboutteno’clockthenextdaytheycame,fortybravesinwarpaintandfeathers。IcounteduntilIwastoosicktosee,thenItookthebabyinmyarmsandclimbedtotheloft,withourbigsteelknifeinonehand。Ifyourfatherfell,Iwastouseit,firstonElizabeth,thenonmyself。TheIndiansstoppedatthewoodyard,andthechiefofthebandcametothedoor,alone。
