  “Yourfatherisagunneralso?“heasked,andIthoughthewaslaughingtohimself。

  “He’senoughofagunnertobringmotherinawagonfromPennsylvaniaallthewayhere,andhekeptwolves,bears,Indians,andGypsiesfromher,andshotthingsforfood。Yessir,myfathercanshootifhewantsto,betterthananyofourfamilyexceptLaddie。“

  “Laddiedoeseverythingwell,“Iansweredproudly。“Hewon’ttrytodoanythingatall,untilhepractisessohecandoitwell。“

  Itoldhimaboutitandhewasinterestedandanxioustoseetheplace。Iftherehadbeenashovel,Iamquitesurehewouldhavegonetodigging。Hekeptpokingaroundwithhisboottoe,andhesaidmaybetheyokelsdidn’tlookgood。
