  Betweenthereallandscapeanditsshadowinthewater,therewasnodivision;bothweresountroubledandclear,and,whilesofraughtwithsolemnmysteryoflifeanddeath,sohopefullyreassuringtothegazer’ssoothedheart,becausesotenderlyandmercifullybeautiful。

  Clennamhadstopped,notforthefirsttimebymanytimes,tolookabouthimandsufferwhathesawtosinkintohissoul,astheshadows,lookedat,seemedtosinkdeeperanddeeperintothewater。Hewasslowlyresuminghisway,whenhesawafigureinthepathbeforehimwhichhehad,perhaps,alreadyassociatedwiththeeveninganditsimpressions。
