  Johnson’sownsuperlativepowersofwitsethimaboveanyriskofsuchuneasiness。Garrickhadremarkedtomeofhim,afewdaysbefore,’Rabelaisandallotherwitsarenothingcomparedwithhim。

  Youmaybedivertedbythem;butJohnsongivesyouaforciblehug,andshakeslaughteroutofyou,whetheryouwillorno。’

  Goldsmith,however,wasoftenveryfortunateinhiswittycontests,evenwhenheenteredthelistswithJohnsonhimself。SirJoshuaReynoldswasincompanywiththemoneday,whenGoldsmithsaid,thathethoughthecouldwriteagoodfable,mentionedthesimplicitywhichthatkindofcompositionrequires,andobserved,thatinmostfablestheanimalsintroducedseldomtalkincharacter。’Forinstance,saidhe,thefableofthelittlefishes,whosawbirdsflyovertheirheads,andenvyingthem,petitionedJupitertobechangedintobirds。Theskillcontinuedhe,consistsinmakingthemtalklikelittlefishes。’Whileheindulgedhimselfinthisfancifulreverie,heobservedJohnsonshakinghissides,andlaughing。Uponwhichhesmartlyproceeded,’Why,Dr。Johnson,thisisnotsoeasyasyouseemtothink;forifyouweretomakelittlefishestalk,theywouldtalklikeWHALES。’
