  Nextday,Godfrey,oncemorearrayedinhisbestclothes,attendedtheprize-givinganddulywasmadetolookfoolish,onlygettinghomejustintimefordinner,afterwhichhisfatherrequestedhimtocheckcertainexaminationpapers。ThencameSundayandchurchatwhichIsobeldidnotappear;twochurchesinfact,andaftertheseateapartytothechurchwardensandtheirwives,towhomGodfreywasexpectedtoexplainthewondersoftheAlps。Beforeitwasover,ifhecouldhavemanagedit,thesestolidfarmerswiththeirfamilieswouldhavelainatthebottomofthedeepestmorainethatexistsamidthosefamousmountains。Buttheretheywere,swallowingteaandmunchingcakewhiletheygazedonhimwithox-likeeyes,andheplungedintowildexplanationsastothemovementsofglaciers。

  “Thenwhydidyounottellyourstorybefore?“sheinquiredwithsomeirritation。

  Alittlequiverranthroughher,causingherdresstoshakeandthegoldMexicangodsonhernecklacetotinkleagainsteachother。Thenshegrewstillasastone,andraisingthoselargeandsteadyeyesofhers,lookedhimupanddown,finallyfixingthemuponhisown。
