OnthisoccasionshewasaccompaniedbyNorthmour，andtheyhadbeenbutashortwhileonthebeach，whenIsawhimtakeforciblepossessionofherhand。Shestruggled，andutteredacrythatwasalmostascream。Isprungtomyfeet，unmindfulofmystrangeposition；but，ereIhadtakenastep，IsawNorthmourbareheadedandbowingverylow，asiftoapologize；anddroppedagainatonceintomyambush。Afewwordswereinterchanged；andthen，withanotherbow，heleftthebeachtoreturntothepavilion。Hepassednotfarfromme，andIcouldseehim，flushedandlowering，andcuttingsavagelywithhiscaneamongthegrass。ItwasnotwithoutsatisfactionthatIrecognizedmyownhandiworkinagreatcutunderhisrighteye，andaconsiderablediscolorationroundthesocket。
