  Ivánreturnedhome,andtherewashisotherbrother,Taráswithhiswife,sittingatsupper。

  TarastheStouthadfailedtopayhisdebts,hadrunawayfromhiscreditors,andhadcomehometohisfather’shouse。WhenhesawIván,’Lookhere’,saidhe,’tillIcanstartinbusinessagain,Iwantyoutokeepmeandmywife。’

  ’Allright,’saidIván,’youcanlivehere,ifyoulike。’

  Ivántookoffhiscoatandsatdowntotable,butthemerchant’swifesaid:’Icannotsitattablewiththisclown,hesmellsofperspiration。’

  ThenTarástheStoutsaid,’Iván,yousmelltoostrong。

  Goandeatoutside。’

  Ivánhadhopedtocutdownhalfahundredsmalltrees,buthadnotfelledevenhalfascore,andnowthenightwascomeandhewastiredout。Thesteamfromhimspreadlikeamistthroughthewood,butstillhestucktohiswork。Heundercutanothertree,buthisbackbegantoachesothathecouldnotstand。Hedrovehisaxeintothetreeandsatdowntorest。

  Theimp,noticingthatIvánhadstoppedwork,grewcheerful。

  ’Atlast,’thoughthe,’heistiredout!Hewillgiveitup。NowIcantakearestmyself。’

  Heseatedhimselfastrideabranchandchuckled。ButsoonIvángotup,pulledtheaxeout,swungitandsmotethetreefromtheoppositesidewithsuchforcethatthetreegavewayatonceandcamecrashingdown。Theimphadnotexpectedthis,andhadnotimetogethisfeetclear,andthetreeinbreaking,grippedhispaw。

  Ivánbegantolopoffthebranches,whenhenoticedaliveimphanginginthetree!Ivánwassurprised。

  ’What,younastything,’sayshe,’soyouarehereagain!’

  ’Iamanotherone,’saystheimp。’IhavebeenwithyourbrotherTarás。’

  ’Whoeveryouareyouhavemetyourfate,’saidIván,andswinginghisaxehewasabouttostrikehimwiththehaft,buttheimpbeggedformercy:’Don’tstrikeme,’saidhe,’andIwilldoanythingyoutellmeto。’

  ’Whatcanyoudo?’

  Ivántooksomeleavesandrubbedthem,andgoldrandownfromhishands。

  ’Thisstuffwilldofine,’saidhe,’forthefellowstoplaywithontheirholidays。’

  ’Nowletmego。’saidtheimp。

  ’Allright,’saidIván,andtakingaleverhesettheimpfree。

  ’Nowbegone!AndGodbewithyou,’sayshe。

  AndassoonashementionedGod,theimpplungedintotheearth,likeastoneintowater。Onlyaholewasleft。

  Sothebrothersbuilthouses,andbegantoliveapart;andIvánfinishedtheharvestwork,brewedbeer,andinvitedhisbrotherstospendthenextholidaywithhim。Hisbrotherswouldnotcome。

  ’Wedon’tcareaboutpeasantfeasts,’saidthey。

  SoIvánentertainedthepeasantsandtheirwives,anddrankuntilhewasrathertipsy。Thenhewentintothestreettoaringofdancers;andgoinguptothemhetoldthewomentosingasonginhishonour;’for,’saidhe,’Iwillgiveyousomethingyouneversawinyourlivesbefore!’

  Thewomenlaughedandsanghispraises,andwhentheyhadfinishedtheysaid,’Nowletushaveyourgift。’

  ’Iwillbringitdirectly,’saidhe。

  Hetookaseed-basketandranintothewoods。Thewomenlaughed。’Heisafool!’saidthey,andtheybegantotalkofsomethingelse。

  ButsoonIváncamerunningback,carryingthebasketfullofsomethingheavy。

  ’ShallIgiveityou?’

  ’Yes!giveittous。’

  Ivántookahandfulofgoldandthrewittothewomen。Youshouldhaveseenthemthrowthemselvesuponittopickitup!Andthemenaroundscrambledforit,andsnatcheditfromoneanother。Oneoldwomanwasnearlycrushedtodeath。Ivánlaughed。

  ’Oh,youfools!’sayshe。’Whydidyoucrushtheoldgrandmother?Bequiet,andIwillgiveyousomemore,’andhethrewthemsomemore。Thepeopleallcrowdedround,andIvánthrewthemallthegoldhehad。Theyaskedformore,butIvánsaid,’Ihavenomorejustnow。AnothertimeI’llgiveyousomemore。Nowletusdance,andyoucansingmeyoursongs。’

  Thewomenbegantosing。

  ’Yoursongsarenogood,’sayshe。

  ’Wherewillyoufindbetterones?’saythey。

  Hewenttothebarn,tookasheaf,thrashedit,stooditup,andbumpeditontheground。

  Andthesheaffellasunderandbecamesomanysoldiers。Thedrumsandtrumpetsbegantoplay。Ivánorderedthesoldierstoplayandsing。Heledthemoutintothestreet,andthepeoplewereamazed,Thesoldiersplayedandsang,andthenIvánforbiddinganyonetofollowhimledthembacktothethrashingground,changedthemintoasheafagain,andthrewitinitsplace。

  Hethenwenthomeandlaydowninthestablestosleep。

  SimontheSoldierheardofallthesethingsnextmorning,andwenttohisbrother。

  ’Tellme,’sayshe,’whereyougotthosesoldiersfrom,andwhereyouhavetakenthemto?’

  ’Whatdoesitmattertoyou?’saidIván。

  ’Whatdoesitmatter?Why,withsoldiersonecandoanything。Onecanwinakingdom。’

  Ivánwondered。

  ’Really!’saidhe;’Whydidn’tyousaysobefore?I’llmakeyouasmanyasyoulike。It’swellthelassandIhavethrashedsomuchstraw。’

  Ivántookhisbrothertothebarnandsaid:

  ’Lookhere;ifImakeyousomesoldiers,youmusttakethemawayatonce,forifwehavetofeedthem,theywilleatupthewholevillageinaday。’

  SimontheSoldierpromisedtoleadthesoldiersaway;andIvánbegantomakethem。Hebumpedasheafonthethrashingfloor——

  acompanyappeared。Hebumpedanothersheaf,andtherewasasecondcompany。Hemadesomanythattheycoveredthefield。

  ’Willthatdo?’heasked。

  Simonwasoverjoyed,andsaid:’Thatwilldo!Thankyou,Iván!’
