  Itwouldbeapity,however,ifitshouldbepartedfromtheparentcountrymerelytobejoinedtoanunsympathetichalf-brotherlikeourselvesandnothing,fortunately,seemstobefurtherfromtheCanadianmind。Therearesomeexperimentsnolongerpossibletouswhichcouldstillbetriedtheretotheadvantageofcivilization,andwewerebettertwogreatnationssidebysidethanaunionofdiscordanttraditionsandideas。ButnonethelessdoestheAmericantraveller,swellingwithforgetfulnessoftheshabbydespotswhogovernNewYork,andtheswindlingrailroadkingswhosewordislawtothewholeland,feellikesayingtothehullingyounggiantbeyondSt。LawrenceandtheLakes,“Severtheapron-stringsofallegiance,andtrytobeyourselfwhateveryouare。“
