  OntheseconddayoftheirmarchintheforestAlanchancedtoseesuchatreefall,andthesightwasonethathenevercouldforget。Asithappened,owingtothevastspreadofitsbrancheswhichhadkilledoutallrivalsbeneath,forinitsdayithadbeenaverysuccessfultreeembuedwithanexcellentconstitutionbyitsparent,itstoodsomewhatalone,sothatfromseveralhundredyardsawayasthesesixhumanbeingscrepttowardsitlikeantstowardsasaplinginacornfield,itsmightygirthandbulksetuponalittlemoundandtheluxuriantgreennessofitsfar-reachingboughsmadeakindoflandmark。Theninthehotnoonwhennobreathofwindstirred,suddenlytheendcame。Suddenlythatmightyboleseemedtocrumble;
