  Thebentfigurehesitatedamoment;andthen,withwhatsoundedlikeadespairingcry,pointedtothetable。

  RhodaGrayfoundhereyesfixedinsudden,strainedfascinationonthetable-as,sheimagined,theAdventurer’sweretoo。Itwasbareofanycovering,norwerethereanyarticlesonitssurface,nor,asfarasshecouldsee,wasthereanydrawer。AndnowtheAdventurer,hisrighthandstillinhiscoatpocket,andbulgingtherewheresheknewquitewellitgraspedhisrevolver,steppedabruptlytothetable,facingtheotherwiththetablebetweenthem。

  TheAdventurer’sface,asnearlyasRhodaGraycouldsee,hadnotmovedamuscle。Heobeyednow,coolly,withashrugofhisshoulders。
