　　In1572，thebutcheryoftheHugnenotstookplaceatParisandthroughoutFrance；whileatthesametimethemurderouspowerofPhilipII。reignedsupremeintheNetherlands。ThesailorsknewwhattheyhadtoexpectfromtheSpanishkingintheeventofhisobtaininghisthreatenedrevengeuponEngland；andundertheirchosenchiefstheyproceededtomakewaruponhim。IntheyearofthemassacreofSt。Bartholomew，DrakesetsailfortheSpanishMaininthePasha，ofseventytons，accompaniedbytheSwan，oftwenty-fivetons；theunitedcrewsofthevesselsamountingtoseventy-threemenandboys。Withthisinsignificantforce，DrakemadegreathavocamongsttheSpanishshippingatNombredeDios。HepartiallycrossedtheIsthmusofDarien，andobtainedhisfirstsightofthegreatPacificOcean。HereturnedtoEnglandinAugust1573，withhisfrailbarkscrammedwithtreasure。
