  Unhappily,however,fortheparishclerk,theghostwasinducedtomakesomepromiseswhichwerethemeansofutterlydestroyingitsreputation。Itpromised,inanswertothequestionsoftheReverendMr。AldritchofClerkenwell,thatitwouldnotonlyfollowthelittleMissParsonswherevershewent,butwouldalsoattendhim,oranyothergentleman,intothevaultunderSt。John’sChurch,wherethebodyofthemurderedwomanwasdeposited,andwouldtheregivenoticeofitspresencebyadistinctknockuponthecoffin。Asapreliminary,thegirlwasconveyedtothehouseofMr。Aldritchnearthechurch,wherealargepartyofladiesandgentlemen,eminentfortheiracquirements,theirrank,ortheirwealth,hadassembled。Aboutteno’clockonthenightofthe1stofFebruary,thegirlhavingbeenbroughtfromCockLaneinacoach,wasputtobedbyseveralladiesinthehouseofMr。Aldritch;astrictexaminationhavingbeenpreviouslymadethatnothingwashiddeninthebedclothes。Whilethegentlemen,。
