  CarthewandWicksturnedtoeachother。

  “O,gammon!there’stidesto-morrow!”retortedTommy。

  “Idon’tdenyit。”answeredWicks,andstoodawhileasifinthought。“ButwhatIcan’tmakeout。”hebeganagain,withagitation,“whatIcan’tmakeoutiswhatyou’remadeof!Tostayinthisplaceisbeyondme。There’sthebloodysungoingdown——andtostayhereisbeyondme!”

  Theothersspoketothesamepurpose。

  Thenheshookhimself,strippedtothebuff,clamberedontherail,drewhimselfupandraisedhisarmstoplunge。Thedivewasnevertaken。Hestoodinsteadtransfixed,hiseyesonthehorizon。

  “Handupthatglass。”hesaid。

  Inatricetheywereallswarmingaloft,thenudecaptainleadingwiththeglass。

  Onthenorthernhorizonwasafingerofgreysmoke,straightinthewindlessairlikeapointofadmiration。
